Lanes of Hope with IUDX Based Green Corridor for Emergency Vehicles

Year 2014, a 21-year-old in Chennai received the gift of life, thanks to an ambulance being able to carry the heart for transplant covering a distance of 12kms in just 14 minutes from Chennai Government General Hospital to Fortis Malhar Hospitals in Adyar, a distance that otherwise takes more than 45mins to cover.

This was the very first instance when a green corridor was created in the country for safe and fast transport of organs for transplant. Since then, the system has helped save many lives across the country. As recently as June 2021, authorities created a green corridor in the northeast from Silchar to Guwahati to shift a 71-year-old patient for advanced treatment. The ambulance carrying the patient covered its journey within eight hours instead of the usual 10-11 hours. This was also by far the longest green corridor created in the country.

Needless to say, that green corridors are true lanes of hope that hold the promise that our loved ones will win the fight for life. However, setting up a green corridor is a tedious process due to the involvement of multiple stakeholders. Since the whole process is done manually, a lot of co-ordination effort is involved with different state police authorities, airport authorities, airport security, Central Industrial Security Force; the recipient institute etc., all within the possible shortest duration to keep the organ viable. Despite all the best efforts, close to 20% of the emergency cases fail mid-way due to ambulance getting stuck in traffic or some other operational issue.

The need of the hour is to use latest technological advancements to create an end-to-end resistance free path for emergency assistance, eliminate chances of human error in the process and also reduce the time and effort taken. This can be done by automating the whole process and creating a Green Corridor Application with the help of IUDX.

The diagram below showcases how IUDX brings together various datasets required to make the application work and smoothens the process of creating an on demand green corridor anytime, anywhere with minimal disruption to regular traffic.

Not only in case of medical emergency, this green corridor application can be used for any instance that requires emergency assistance: fire engines to reach affected destinations in time; for police vehicles to reach the crime scene without wasting precious time in traffic; or in the current pandemic situation where during the second wave oxygen had to be transported to every nook and corner of the country. The possibilities are endless.
